The working world is changing more rapidly than ever before, are you properly equipped to cope?

There are two major shifts in society that will change the way we work significantly

  1. More jobs will become automated – up to 30% of jobs in the UK could be automated by 2030.
  2. More people will work freelance. It’s estimated that by 2020 50% of Americans will be freelancers.

Another two factors that will change the jobs landscape are:

  1. We will all have to work longer. Retirement ages are already being pushed back and companies pension schemes are not as reliable as they used to be so you might land up working well into retirement.
  2. This longer working life poses the question; do we really want to stick with the same career for 60+ years? Is a job we chose in our late teens still the right job at 40 or 60? There are already many people who change jobs at middle age, and then again when they down size and semi retire in their 60’s. This may become more common over time.

With all this upheaval in the jobs market it is more important than ever that we are flexible and resilient in our jobs whatever stage we are at in our careers. We should all have at least one plan on how we could go it alone, should we ever have to, that involves more than driving an Uber – a career that is already threatened by driverless vehicles – or becoming a Task Rabbit.

The four steps to resilience

  1. Be self sufficient. Employers and educational establishments plan and train for the present, for what they need you to do now. It is up to you to secure your future, don’t look to other people to find solutions for you. Inevitably if it’s a solution dreamed up by someone else it won’t be a perfect fit for you.
  2. Plan ahead. Always keep your eye on the future and track the changes taking place, be aware of threats and opportunities coming your way and take action to avoid the threats and take advantage of the opportunities.
  3. Invest in yourself. Lifelong learning is critical, make sure you keep your work skills are up to date and keep learning new skills. The world is changing all the time, make sure you keep up. Make your training as broad as possible to cover unexpected outcomes.
  4. Develop a resilient mindset. Resilience is about bouncing back. It’s about having life chuck obstacles in your path and working out how to get past them, over them or under them and not allowing yourself to be defeated. You can learn how to bounce back. Whilst some people seem to be naturally resilient and don’t even see as barriers what may look like insurmountable blocks to others, resilience can be learned. A great deal of research has now demonstrated that the difference between entrepreneurs who succeed and people who fail, is the entrepreneurs ability to keep going no matter how many times they fail. They tend to see life as a challenge to be overcome and they keep picking away at it.
